Verizon Update
11/1/03
A. Lawsuits
It appears that Verizon is being hit from all sides in the courtroom by various organizations. One egregious situation that bears mentioning is a suit that alleged overcharging practices. One woman in Santa Barbara California noticed that she was being overbilled for months. When she attempted to bring it to Verizon's attention, she was ignored. Ultimately she brought a class action suit against them which has amounted to a $20,000,000 settlement. What is interesting about this suit is that Verizon knew that she and others were being overcharged, yet refused to refund the difference until they were forced to. We have received many inquiries into this particular suit because so many people were affected by it (approximately 1,500,000 customers.) You can read about the situation here: http://www.lightreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=41218 and if you feel that you could be part of this class, you may contact the attorneys by following this link: B. Verizonpathetic has been contacted directly by an
attorney in Florida who is putting together a suit that will be of
interest to some of you. His letter is as follows:
"I'm an attorney in Gainesville, FL and
I'm filing a class action against Verizon for:
1. Charging or attempting to collect
roaming charges on the nationwide calling plan that advertised no roaming
charges. (verizon evidently claimed to be passing along charges from other
carriers not in their network)
2. Charging or attempting to charge an
early termination fee with no written contract supporting the charge.
(evidently Verizon will arbitrarily claim entitlement to this fee even
though the original contract term expired and the costomer was on a month
to month or had orally agreed to change to another plan after the
promotional plan had expired.)
3. Turning disputed claims over to
collections after being made aware the charges were in
dispute.
I'd like to hear from everyone in Florida
that has been exposed to these or similar practices. Contact thewinniespa@yahoo.com
Thanks

= No Surprise
If you have read about the history of the Bell
companies on our site, then you will recall that promises were made in the
'90's to build out a fiberoptic network and create the "information
superhighway" if various incentives were given to the Bells. Twice
this was done, and twice the Bells did not build out the promised
networks. Now it looks as if they are going for strike
three.
After the FCC decision again gave Verizon and the
other Bell companies almost everything they wanted, Verizon is leading the
pack by saying that it won't happen until basically every demand is
met. An article in the Boston Globe which discusses the situation in
detail can be found here:
