Verizon Update 2/1/03

A. Make or Break

This month, the FCC will put forth a proposal that may have drastic consequences for Verizon competitors in the the DSL market. Bell companies have thus far been forced to share their inherited networks with competitors in an effort to restrain the unfettered control that the Bell companies possess. That may all change if FCC chairman, Michael Powell, has his way.
Verizon argues that it has no incentive to build out it's infrastructure if it has to lease it's networks to other companies. Of course what Verizon fails to mention are that those competitors are the reason why we have such an expansive internet to begin with. Verizon also fails to mention how it has promised twice before to build a fiberoptic network for the country and has twice failed to do so.
Why would someone give them a third chance? Chairman Powell has apparently bought into their argument, and like many in the industry, fails to understand the full impact of what such a change could mean.

B. Yet Another Law Suit

In the state of New Jersey, Verizon is facing another legal battle. This one contends that a percentage of all customers are paying for phone circuits that do not exist. How can this be? Because phone auditors who have been collecting bill after bill have found that Verizon has been charging these false fees to a large number of consumers. As Verizonpathetic has maintained for years, both Verizon and the other Bell companies have both hidden and illicit charges appearing on a high percentage of consumer invoices. Now that more evidence has been collected, Verizon will have some explaining to do.

C. Bringing the Battle to Verizon

One of the most successful campaigns to demonstrate what Verizon is doing to the consumer are the phone bill audits. Verizon has a very difficult time arguing it's case when up to 50% of phone bills in random studies are showing errors in their favor. Unfortunately the majority of the suits have been limited to individual states.
In an effort to bring about a class action suit on a national front, we will need to collect phone bills from all Verizon territories. Now there is actually an 800 number (866-390-9237) that will connect directly to the organization who can retrieve your "stolen goods." Remember also that when mistakes are found, you receive a check!
