Verizon Update 4/25/01

A.  Tauzin Bill

A new bill which has the potential to give Verizon (and other bell companies) an unbelievable edge in the high-speed market will be weighed in the senate shortly.

Representative Bill Tauzin of Louisiana has created a bill which would eliminate any requirement that the Bells offer high-speed lines to competitors, such as DSL providers like Covad. The Bell companies have claimed they should not have to do so even under the 1996 Act's provisions, because DSL and other lines are "advanced services" not related to voice competition. But fortunately the FCC has ruled otherwise, since this service is carried over regular phone lines.

Should this bill pass, there will literally be no competition for any of the bells in the future, and all would likely be lost.

Although this site is a little "extreme" in it's views, you can gain an education on this issue by visiting:
and see exactly how far this bill is going.

B.  Verizon Allowed to Enter Massachusetts Long Distance Market

For those of you who have followed this unfolding situation, the ruling comes as a great surprise.  Verizon had to prove that it had adequately opened up it's local markets in the Bay state before the FCC would grant this request.  Apparetnly those at the FCC seem to see an extremely different picture than many others looking at the facts.  Against opposition from consumer groups, businesses, and even the Massachusetts Attorney General himself, Verizon has been allowed into this arena.

C.  Class Action Suits

Although it has been over a month since Verizon's appeal was brought before the judge, there has yet to be a ruling.

As a result, many of the suits are in limbo as they await the decision.  Once a decision is made, Verizonpathetic will apprise everyone of the next step.
