Verizon Update 7/11/01

A.  Tauzin/Dingell Bill

As many of are aware from previous updates, this bill poses a serious threat to telecommunications industry by allowing the bells to offer long distance, voice and data services without first having to open up their exclusive networks to competition.  For an overview of this measure, you can go here: http://www.war.iglou.com/

In the latest chapter, the House Judiciary Committee gave the bill an unfavorable recommendation last month.  This makes the fight much easier for those of us in opposition to this ludicrous piece of legislation.  The committee rejected the bill unanimously, but because the panel does not have full jurisdiction, the bill still goes to the House floor.  The House may actually decide as early as this week what the ultimate fate of the bill will be.

B.  Class Action Suits

There were initially three class actions that were filed with the potential of realizing damages for the public.  Although the appellate court's decision to throw out one of the class action suits has made legal battle more challenging, the lawyers at the forefront of the war are refusing to give in.

Verizon argued that the waiver customers must click through absolves themselves of the responsibilities that would normally seem to apply.  When the first suit was thrown out, it set a precedent which would likely cause the following suits to fail as well.

However, one of the actions was re-filed only a week ago and the third suit will likely do the same.  If the suits are worded differently enough to survive the first round of court, then Verizon will be facing an uphill battle.

C.  Detrimental E-mail Change for Many Customers

Verizon is informing its customers that its mail servers will shortly no longer accept email from subscribers that has a "from" address that is something other than banet.net, bellatlantic.net, verizon.net or gte.net.  This needless policy change will be frustrating for those who operate their own domain name/business, and wish to send email out as though it was "from" their domain.  This change will go into effect as of July 12th.

In contrast, Earthlink just blocked port 25, a measure forcing all email through their servers for abuse tracking.  This is a much more sensible spam control solution, however Verizon would prefer instead to continue with their tradition of offering sub-standard services.

D.  Making Your Representatives Work for You

During this process, any contact with state reps, senators, congressmen, etc. via phone, e-mail, letters, etc. will help tremendously.  Please remember that their job is to represent the people and their views.  Thus far, the concerted effort from individuals has made a tremendous difference in preventing Verizon and other bell companies from completely running out of control.  Although some major battles have been won, to let up on the pressure now would be extremely harmful.

Therefore, please continue to let your state representatives know that you have concerns and that these concerns need to be addressed.
